LONESOME PINE SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION DISTRICT
Mission Statement
The Lonesome Pine
Soil and Water Conservation District is an organization which
cooperates with local, state, federal governments, local
citizens, groups and businesses to preserve our nation’s soil
and water resources. All programs and activities of the
district are provided without regard to race, color, national
origin, sex, religion, age, disability, political beliefs,
sexual orientation, marital or family status.
The Commonwealth of Virginia
supports the Lonesome Pine Soil and Water Conservation District
through financial and administrative assistance provided by the
Department of Conservation and Recreation.
A six member Board of
Directors administers the District programs. The Board is
composed of local citizens who are familiar with local soil and
water conservation problems. The directors serve without pay.
Four are elected every four years (two from each county) and two
are appointed by the Virginia Soil and Water Conservation
Board. One Director, appointed by state mandate, is a member of
the Virginia Cooperative Extension Service.
The District office is
housed with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service
located on Main Street in Clintwood, Virginia. Office hours
are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The District

“A Soil and Water
Conservation District…Shall constitute a governmental
subdivision of this State, and a public body corporate and
politic, exercising public power…”
“They (a district and its
directors) shall have power to develop comprehensive programs
and plans for the conservation of soil resources and for the
control and prevention of soil erosion and for flood prevention
or agricultural and nonagricultural phases of the conservation,
development, utilization, and disposal of water within the
district…”
Soil and water
conservation districts are basic components of a multilevel
organization structure that joins local, regional, state and
federal agencies in a common effort with citizens to conserve
and use wisely the nation’s basic natural resources.
The Lonesome Pine Soil
and Water Conservation District provides residents and land
owners in Dickenson and Wise Counties assistance to wisely
manage and maintain their valuable natural resources.
District residents
(citizens of Dickenson and Wise Counties) may wish to refer to
the background section of the Code of Virginia, Title 10.1-512,
which determined the need for such conservation programs,
established the Virginia Soil and Water Conservation Commission
an authorized establishment of the Districts. There are now 47
Districts throughout Virginia.

PROVIDE EDUCATIONAL AND TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE IN NATURAL RESOURCE
CONSERVATION. LONESOME PINE SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION
DISTRICT WILL ASSIST LOCAL GOVERNMENT, LANDHOLDERS, SCHOOLS,
CIVIC GROUPS AND BUSINESSES TO COOPERATE AND COMMUNICATE THROUGH
POSITIVE MOTIVATION. LONESOME PINE SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION
DISTRICT WILL PROVIDE ALL PRACTICAL PROTECTION POSSIBLE FOR AIR
AND WATER QUALITY, AVAILABLE WATER SOURCES, SOIL PRODUCTIVITY,
FOREST MANAGEMENT, AND ENERGY CONSERVATION.”
